Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury and look through their trash. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was handed and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. From this position she started her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has created lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
